This tournament is the ultimate example of why you don't do one of these shortly after a new game comes out if said game's music hits hard. Because inevitably recency bias trumps any logic or thought.

There's some things I agree with fidel on and some things I don't for example I think some of the things he says aren't really gimmicks it's more of a mechanic or a gameplay style for example the Werehog is more of a gameplay style change rather than a gimmick per se also I don't agree with him on saying Tails using a Mech is weird I think it's cool but I think they should have done is have tails be like half of this gameplay is like his Adventure one where he's flying moving around stuff but then part of that gameplay also be where at times during the level he would get into his mech and like fly or drive and shoot part ways I think it's a good mixture of the two also I love heroes and I love it's mechanic you know I think it's cool having multiple characters at the same time switching and using their abilities that's awesome so I do agree on that but I don't agree with his opinion of the game I love the game and mechanics both as well also I do love the Wisps as well I think they're cool although used a bit much and weirdly at times other than that I mostly agree with what he says on almost everything give or take a few things

Advance 3 has some of the best movement mechanics ive played in any game honestly… know who to pair with who and you can break the levels seriously. What other game lets knuckles do spindash up walls??????

You wanna know something I really liked? The Skills you can get access to in Generations. Like giving Modern an endless Boost, or giving Classic the Homing Attack. Or even niche ones like giving Classic the elemental shields, or being able to instantly stop all your momentum. I feel like it was a missed opportunity that they didn’t continue doing this in all the games going forward. Being able to give Sonic a vast selection of Skills to change the way you play the game just makes things more fun.

I think a lot about how Shadow The Hedgehog (2005) was literally Undertale an entire decade before Undertale and it disappoints me how they fumbled the bag because if done well it could've been AWESOME

The combi-ring from Knuckles Chaotix is probably the worst Sonic gimmick imho. It just isn’t fun at all

It's really funny that I feel this way after Lost World and Forces ran the mechanic into the ground, but I think the Wisps still have so much untapped potential. Imagine each one being a powerup that you use with the press of a button on the time limit, but otherwise don't restrict your normal movement so you can use them on the fly like the Chaos Emerald powers from Superstars? LIKE IMAGINE DRILLING OUT OF THE GROUND AND DOING SOME PLATFORMING THEN GOING BACK UNDERGROUND AGAIN AAAHHHHH IT WOULD BE SO SMOOTH I guess they're expanding on that core idea of timed ability-enhancing powerups in Sonic tho so that's good

This is a hard one for me to answer. I would say the Wisp from Sonic Colors is my favorite because you be able to use different Wisp abilities to get to different areas that you couldn’t before like finding a hidden red ring in previous levels.

when I played Advance 3 for the first time last year, I ended up using Sonic & Tails special moves quite a bit. The ground one is when Tails chucks Sonic really high and the aerial one is Tails carrying Sonic like the classics and both are quite useful. I never really tried out the other characters but some are meh and others are fine

i feel like classic sonic and the open zone are the gimmicks of generations and frontiers since both of them are the hook of those games

idk if we're gonna call it a gimmick but the trick system feels like it should just *always* be a part of Sonic's core gameplay in a game like Advance 2 and Rush having movement-based tricks to traverse a level while keeping speed just feels so good to do and feels so distinctly Sonic-like. the tricks in Gens and Frontiers are fine for the games they are, but there's something about the Advance 2/Rush-style of movement tricks that makes accessing different parts of a level feel incredible

I feel like the wisps are a really well done gimmick that colors used amazingly, the reason why they aren’t good is cause of the constant reuse of them but solely looking at Colors they were a fun mechanic.

There are definitely a lot of gimmicks and I like all of them or at least the vast majority (Rush Adventure's vehicle system looks cool but gets repetitive very quickly and the Wisps are good but what saves it is the fact that they are optional) I think One of my favorites that I would really like to see back would be parkour because it's a really good idea that has a lot of potential but hasn't been put to good use since you can do a lot of cool things, the Werehog combat is a good example how cool and fun combat can be, you just need a progressive difficulty so that enemies have a balanced resistance and you can beat them at will with different combos like an anime character, in addition to the skill tree found in several games where you can put together your build with the skills that you like most, this seems to be able to go together very well with the Open Zone style, I don't know if this counts as a gimmick or mechanic but I also like how Emerl works in Sonic Battle, SEGA invented it an avatar system with customizable moveset way before Street Fighter 6 lol

All the team based mechanics are always my favorites. It's kind of why Advance 3 is my favorite of the trilogy, since all of the partner mechanics just work so well, though the classic duo of Sonic and Tails is my personal favorite, just with how fun it is to use them and their trick mechanics (which I'll admit, is one of the two good things in Advance 2). And while I still haven't gotten around to playing Heroes, and it'd sure be nice to see a remaster, I still love how unique the team mechanic is in there. Even Sonic 4 Ep. 2's Sonic and Tails tag team actions are really fun to mess around with. So yeah, I'd say these three games probably have my favorite gimmicks throughout the series tbh.

I couldn't finish Secret Rings, I just... couldn't with the controls Black Knight was fire tho. My problem with Unleashed's Werehog is simply, its like a Stop sign on a road with a crazy speed limit I didn't vibe with it. Most of the others are fine tbh, I, get that I kinda go on and on about Superstars and Frontiers but real talk; those games opened a whole new conversation about remakes and improvement that makes me think they're definitely a step in the right direction.
